AdMob iPhone Ad Unit

An example on how the mobile Web + advertising + real life location can work nicely together. No more hand waving, nor fancy flash demo. This is real.

The meaning behind the name

True story. I didn’t make this up.

Our office is used to be an old Japanese restaurant. When people visit the office, we usually would like to mention that due to the Eastern deco and design.
At the door, there’s a Chinese / Kanji sign with the word 摩耶 (Maya) on it. I’ve never spent the time to figure out if that is real Japanese character or just some Chinese or Taiwanese people ran the place and named the place 摩耶.

Today the true meaning of the word all of a sudden became a top of discussion again. Literal translation, 摩 could mean “Magic”. 耶 is a little harder to give it a meaning. Character wise, is a combination of two ear(s).

Nigel did a quick search on Wiki and found 摩耶 is also the name of a WWII Japanese Cruiser. Well mystery is solved and that’s pretty cool and all…. Then all of a sudden Wayne mentioned: Today, Aug 6th, is the Hiroshima Anniversary.

Now that’s pretty creepy.

We need a new buzz word for San Mateo

As indicate by this blog post, San Mateo is becoming the center of mobile development. There’s at least a dozen mobile related startup at San Mateo. What should we call this? We need a new buzz word for San Mateo so the media can cover this more. NYC Soho used to be the “Silicon Alley”. List of placed with “Silicon” names.

EOS – Not the Camera + Random Branding Thoughts

I’ve always admire companies that’s are good at launching “product brands”.

“Playstation”, “EOS”, “Macintosh” are just a few I can name quickly.

It’s interesting the so-called “Internet companies” have a much harder time (or maybe lack of $$$) to launch “product brands”. I mean, you always see Yahoo! this or Google that. How boring.

But what about “recycle” of brand name that is already being used?

Volkswagen just launched a new car named EOS. EOS of course is the famous Canon camera line. I wonder what causes VW to consider EOS.

Trouble with I-Mode (around the world)

While I wrote about the launch of I-Mode in Hong Kong a few weeks back, it looks like O2 (Europe) and Telstra (Australia) are actually moving away from I-mode. Best quote in the IHT article:

“I-mode’s major drawback, Nicholas said, was that it was a closed system, requiring users to obtain i-mode software and forcing mobile content providers to adhere to rigid i-mode rules for designing Internet data and games for i-mode devices.”

mocoNews: Japanese phones don’t seem that far ahead.

I have been saying that for a few years now, and mocoNews’ writer James seems to agree with my thoughts on this. Whenever I hear people said how great the Japanese phones are, I usually would try to politely point out that’s not entirely true.
The Japanese mobile industry seems far ahead because of their consumer wide adoptation of their phones as the primary internet device. To stay competative, carriers and handset manufecturers are force to go super high end or super cute to keep their customers. What’s usually being sacraficse is the easy of use of most of these handsets. But the “positive vibe” is certainly there to encourage the healthy eco system of hardware, software, and services.

Paperless Billing

I am not a “tree hugger”, but I switched over to “Payless Billing” on a few of my accounts today.

I am sure this will benefit the corporation America greatly (on cost saving), but at least that’s something anyone (with a computer) can do to try help out the environment.

Not sure the site LifeHacker got some tips or tricks like this. 😛
